D-Panthenol: the soothing active that pampers the skin barrier
Among the actives that appear most often in the INCI lists of products for sensitive skin, D-Panthenol is perhaps the one we talk about least. Yet it is a classic ingredient, used for decades in dermocosmetic formulations precisely because it does one simple thing and does it well: it helps the skin feel comfortable, hydrated and less reactive. At a time when skincare is putting the skin barrier back at the centre of attention, it is worth getting to know it better.
What is D-Panthenol
D-Panthenol (INCI: Panthenol) is the alcohol form of vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, which our body uses in a great many metabolic processes. The letter "D" indicates the biologically active form: once applied to the skin, D-Panthenol is converted into pantothenic acid, which in turn takes part in the synthesis of coenzyme A, a cofactor also involved in the production of skin lipids. It is a small, water-soluble and well-tolerated molecule, so much so that it is also used in formulas for the eye area and for the most delicate skin.
How it works on the skin: the benefits
D-Panthenol works on several fronts, and this is what makes it such a versatile active. First of all, it is a humectant: it attracts and holds water in the upper layers of the epidermis, helping to keep the skin soft and supple. At the same time it supports normal cell renewal and the skin barrier, helping to limit transepidermal water loss. The result is more comfortable skin that feels less tight and looks smoother.
Its second great quality is its soothing action. D-Panthenol helps to ease the sensation of skin that "burns" or stings after exposure to wind or cold, after shaving, or after treatments with more energetic actives such as exfoliants and retinoids. This is why it is often found in formulas designed for post-treatment care, where it helps the skin regain its balance. It has no occlusive action, so it does not feel heavy and suits combination and oily skin well too.
An active that gets along with everyone
Unlike other ingredients that call for care when combined, D-Panthenol is a reliable companion. It pairs well with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidant vitamins, and does not interfere with acids or retinoids: on the contrary, it makes them more pleasant to use.
How to fit it into your routine
D-Panthenol can be used morning and evening, all year round, with no special precautions. The key is its place in the routine: apply it to clean, dry skin, after cleansing and before your cream, so it can work deep down and prepare the skin for the next steps. If your skin is reactive, you can make it the foundation of your hydrating routine; if you use exfoliants or retinol in the evening, you can add it the following morning as a comforting step.
It is particularly suited to three situations: the eye area, where the skin is thinner and tends to dehydrate; oily and blemish-prone skin, which is often treated with purifying actives and needs a soothing counterbalance; and seasonal changes, when temperature swings and indoor heating put the skin barrier to the test. Consistency and lightness make the difference: a few well-chosen products, used every day, deliver more than constantly switching formulas.
