Liposomes: the technology that delivers actives where they're needed

When we read "with liposomes" on a cream label, we tend to think of it as one more ingredient. In reality, liposomes are not an active: they are a delivery system. Their job is to take charge of a formula's functional molecules, protect them and carry them onto the skin as efficiently as possible. It is a technology born in the pharmaceutical field that reached cosmetics decades ago, yet it still makes the difference between a formula that "contains" an active and one that makes it truly available.

What liposomes are

Liposomes are microscopic spherical vesicles, measuring fractions of a micron. Their wall is a double layer of phospholipids, the same molecules that make up the membranes of our cells, and inside they enclose a small amount of water. This architecture is their strength: water-soluble molecules find room in the aqueous core, while oil-soluble ones slip into the lipid bilayer. One carrier, two families of actives.

In cosmetics the most common phospholipid is phosphatidylcholine, usually obtained from lecithin. It is a well-tolerated ingredient with a strong affinity for the skin, which recognises the liposome's structure as something familiar.

How they work and what benefits they bring

They protect the active

Many precious actives are unstable: vitamin C oxidises, some antioxidants degrade in light or on contact with air. Enclosed in the liposome, they stay isolated from the outside environment until the moment of application. This helps the formula maintain its effectiveness over time, from the first use to the last.

They interact with the skin barrier

The stratum corneum is a selective barrier, designed to keep out what isn't needed. Thanks to a lipid composition similar to that of the skin's intercellular lipids, liposomes are able to interact with this barrier and help actives reach the most superficial layers of the epidermis, where cosmetic formulas are meant to act. In practice, the active reaches where it can work instead of sitting on the surface.

They release gradually

Once on the skin, the vesicle doesn't give up its whole content in an instant: it releases it progressively, as its wall merges with the skin's lipids. The result is a more prolonged action and, often, better tolerability, because the skin receives the active in a gentler, steadier way.

A comfort bonus

The phospholipids themselves don't disappear once their cargo is released: they contribute softness and comfort, blending with the natural lipids of the skin's surface. It is a side effect, but a welcome one, especially for skin that tends to feel tight.

How to add liposomes to your routine

Liposomal technology doesn't call for special precautions: products that use it are applied like any cream or mask. A few useful tips to make the most of it:

  • Clean, dry skin. After cleansing, and if you like after a water-based serum, apply the liposomal product with a light massage: the warmth of your fingers helps the vesicles merge with the skin.
  • Consistency first. Gradual release works best with regular use: morning and evening for creams, once or twice a week for masks.
  • Pair with care. There's no need to layer intense exfoliants at the same time: letting the delivered actives do their work is already a great step.
  • SPF by day. If the formula contains brightening actives such as vitamin C, sun protection in the morning completes its action and helps preserve the result.

Recommended Chrissie products

In the Liposomes collection you'll find the Chrissie treatments that use this technology, starting with the Luxury line with 24K gold.

  • Liposome Gold 24K Cream: a face cream for morning and evening, with the Gold-Vitamin C-Glutathione complex encapsulated in liposomes, alongside Ascorbyl Glucoside, Resveratrol and fermented Pomegranate extract. It helps give the complexion radiance and make it look visibly more even.
  • Liposome Gold 24K Mask: a gel mask for the evening, once or twice a week, with the same liposomal complex plus Mandarin and Evodia extracts. Designed for dull, tired skin that needs to regain freshness and radiance.

Used together, cream and mask form a complete ritual: the mask as a weekly intensive treatment, the cream as a daily gesture. Few steps, but well delivered.

In short

  • Liposomes are not an active but a delivery system: phospholipid vesicles that enclose and protect functional molecules.
  • They carry both water-soluble and oil-soluble actives and release them gradually into the superficial layers of the skin.
  • They protect unstable ingredients, such as vitamin C, helping the formula stay effective over time.
  • They're used like any cream or mask: clean skin, consistency and SPF in the morning.
  • At Chrissie you'll find them in the Luxury line with 24K gold: Liposome Gold 24K Cream and Liposome Gold 24K Mask.
